Joe Charlevoix was born in Norway, Michigan, a small town located on the Wisconsin border near Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula. Ever since he was a young child, he has been fascinated with the weather. When Joe was 3 or 4 years old, he was drawing weather maps with crayons and his eyes were glued to the television meteorologists, most notably at WLUC TV6 in Marquette.
Growing up in the Upper Peninsula was a great experience. Joe was able to enjoy the outdoors, and all of the things that make life north of the bridge so great.
Throughout high school, Joe was active in sports, band, and was class president senior year at Norway High School. During Joe's junior year of high school, he lived in the town of Nordenham, Germany located on the North Sea as an exchange student and traveled throughout much of Western Europe.
After high school, Joe attended college at Valparaiso University in Indiana. One of Joe's best memories from college was his freshman year when Valparaiso went to the Sweet 16 in the college basketball tournament. While in college, Joe pursued a degree in Broadcast Meteorology and interned in Chicago with WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling. Tom and Joe remain close friends.
Joe graduated from college in May 2001. Shortly after graduating, Joe accepted a job back in the Upper Peninsula with ABC Affiliate WBKP/WBUP-TV in Marquette, Michigan as morning news/weather producer and anchor and noon show meteorologist. Joe also provided weather for radio station WKMJ-FM in Houghton, Michigan.
Since 2002, Joe has forecast the weather at WPBN/WTOM TV 7&4 first as a weekend meteorologist and since 2005, as morning meteorologist and also does some forecasting on sister station ABC 29&8.
Joe met his wife Sara in Traverse City in 2007 and were married in 2008. They have 2 children, daughter Ava and son Kent.
By the way, Joe wants everyone to know his last name is "not made up" and really is Charlevoix. It's coincidental there is a county, city, and lake with his name in the viewing area.
